Boeing has just recently formulated some new education strategies that are aligned to sharpen their focus on supporting education in the community. The latest issue of the Boeing Frontier magazine has a number of articles that highlight Boeings involvement in the communities where their people live.

Boeings education strategy is listed as follows:
1. Aligns and leverages all resources to support systemic and continuous improvement in the public school system.
2. Focuses on teacher effectiveness in K-12 public education.
3. States that initiatives will target math, science and literacy.
4. Is designed to enable all children to succeed in a technological global society.
I discussed this subject with members of the Bluebill executive council and we feel there is an opportunity for the Bluebills to support these strategies here in the Puget Sound area. In pursuit of this effort, Bob Lambert, Lyle Foltz, Jim Noblitt and I had an exploratory meeting with the Bellevue Community College, Corporate & Community Liaison, to see if we could find some common interest area to the benefit of the Bluebills, BCC and the eastside community. After an hour of discussion and exchange of ideas, we concluded that there is reason to continue this exploratory planning. Our next meeting is scheduled for November 3rd.
We are looking for projects that would have some interest for retirees on the eastside where we have not had the involvement we would like. I would encourage you to read the articles in the September issue of the Boeing Frontier and if you have any suggestions please forward them to me at mervshetler@comcast.net. |

Jeanne Haase , Heritage Chapter Chairperson, just returned from two months of touring Scotland. From her report to the council, it sounds like she had a wonderful time and a lot of traveling visiting various cities in that scenic country. Maybe we can entice her to do a Bluebill Voyager section in the near future to share some of her adventures and experiences with the rest of us.

Jeanne also noted that candidates for the Volunteer of the Year are being solicited and the plan for the recognition dinner is on track for November 5th at the Maplewood Golf Center in Renton. Dick Foley will be the speaker and the Seafair Pirates are part of the program.
Our signature program -- Kids in Need/Gifts in Kind -- has developed into a five day work week during the school year. This is having a burnout affect on some of our dedicated volunteers that support the warehouse and help the teachers as they come through the area. We may have to cut back on the number of open days during the week or solicit some new volunteers to spell the current team. We now have 107 schools involved in the program and this is a very busy time at the start of the school year.

Bob Lee, education committee chair, has been working with Boeing Engineering to implement the World in Motion project from an Everett program to a company wide effort. The project is evaluating the effects of the new company education strategy guidelines on their current plans. We can see some opportunities for our Bluebill volunteers in support of this effort. See Sno-King Chapter to get more information by contacting Bob, or one of the Sno-King chapter leaders.

We are always ready to publicize Bluebills. Please, if you come away from a volunteer assignment that leaves you with an unusually warm fuzzy feeling, think about sharing that experience with all of us. It's worth its weight in gold, recruitment-wise. It will also help us get recognition from Boeing executive offices. Alert your chapter chair, or email Nancy Wright (nancylwright@earthlink.net) or Mike Yanega at myanega@bowfinprintworks.com. And don't forget good pictures.
And finally, let me ask you to critique our efforts. Tell us what you want, what interests you and how you use the information we provide or could provide. The unique age of electronic communication offers us the ability to make rapid updates and changes |
